Default split sleeper birth?

Without getting too complicated, could someone explain the perimiters of loging "split sleeper birth?
By using it, can I spend two or three hours in the sleeper during the middle of hours of service to extend my 14 hours by that two or three hours spent in the sleeper?

Thanx, Steve

Alright, Basically sleeper berth split is use to extend your day. All you do is take 8 consentive hours sleeper berth. Then you are able to do your 11 hour driving rule again just as long as you take your other 2 hour within the 11 hour driving rule. Say you do your 8 consentive sleeper berth hours. After you do that you can do your 11 hour driving rule. By driving 5 hours then taking the other 2 hours left(on off duty line or sleeper berth line) on your 10 hours off duty time. Then, driving 6 more hours on your driving time which equal 11 hours. See basically thats all it is doing is extending your day. but, no to answer you question, you can not spend 3 hours on sleeper berth. It want count, you have to do the whole 8 hours to do the sleeper berth split.

No spending 2 or 3 hours in the sleeper DOES NOT extend your 14 hour clock only 8 consecutive hours will extend it.

The only legal way to split now is an 8/2 split. No more 7/3, 6/4, or 5/5.
You are still limited to 11 hours of driving within a 14 hour window.
In the event you use the 8/2 split this means the 14 hour rule will be extended for 8 hours. You must then add 2 more hours either off duty or 2 more hours in the sleeper to legitimate the split.
Be aware you do not get a fresh 11 hours of drive time UNTIL you have a full 10 hour break. The same goes for a new 14 hour work window.
With this rule it is really counterproductive to use because you do not get a "fresh" 11 hours or a "fresh" 14 hour work window. If your going to bed for 8 hours you might as well stay for 2 more hours and start "fresh."

Too many drivers do not understand this rule and ultimately wind up in violation. I recommend not using this unless you have a firm grasp on the concept.

The easiest way to do it is to long a continuous 10 hours every time you need sleeper berth time to replenish your 11hrs driving and 14 hours on duty. Take the 10 hours and you good to go for another 11/14. The only reason they allowed the 8 and 2 split is because the LTL companies whined about not being able to call the drivers until the 10 hours was up. They are allowed to call at 8 hours for 10 to show up to work.
