Question Gps

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here, I just found this board this morning. I thought I would post to ask for some assistance.

My father is an owner/operator and I was thinking that a good gift for him for Christmas might be a GPS unit for his truck. He has recently started up his own company but is still continuing to drive. I would like to get him anything that could make his days less stressful. He is of the "old school" (he's not even 50 yet ), but is slowly learning how to use the computer and things like that.

I would like some input as to what your thoughts are on GPS units, and if you are a fan of them, what units would you suggest?

Thanks so much!

Alk technologies puts out co-pilot for laptop computers. You can buy the gps antennae and plug it into the usb port on the back of your laptop and get real time turn by turn directions. This is the only product I know of that is designed exclusively for trucks. The gps systems you see at circuit city and electronics stores are designed for cars. I believe the Magellan system has an rv setting that may be helpful but I have not heard of any (other than co-pilot) that actually has restricted routes and low underpasses already programmed into their database.
I have heard that co-pilot works best with windows xp. I do not think co-pilot has adapted to the new Microsoft Vista operating system yet.

Garmin makes one with a truck route setting.

I like the Garmin products and feel they are the best. TomTom and Magellan are starting to copy them as far as widescreen modes etc.

These two units are pricey but I've seen many OTR drivers with them and they love it to death.
StreetPilot® 7200

StreetPilot® 7500

I use a Nuvi for my peddle route. Damn thing is awesome! I still carry a map book with me to write stuff down. I also use it in my personal vehicle to find other stuff.

Stay away from the local stores like BestBuy or CircuitCity, Walmarts, Sams's, Costco etc. They still sell all GPS units close to retail prices.

Check this link out:
GPSdiscount.com ..They are Authorized to sell Garmin products so you can be assured that they are not black market junk. Very affordable stuff in here.

Keep us updated on what you end up getting your father.
Remember: If it wasn't for your dad...you wouldn't be born. Get him the best!

i have a Garmin c320 and loved it when i was running the system. it does have a truck setting, but it's basically worthless. as with most technology you must use a bit of common sense. if a road looks like you cannot get truck down it, keep driving and the garmin will give you another route. i've never had it lead me wrong though. it can be set to avoid interstates, toll roads, and various other things as well.
