Question OTR drivers, how do you satisfy your internet needs/wants?

This is aimed at drivers who make use of the internet as frequent as you can.

I know OTR means long treks, and I know driving is done most of the day. Still, you find time for internet use.

How do you do it?
Do you carry a laptop with you? If so, what ISP do you use and what is your cost for it?

Please share any worthwhile information you can about this topic. Give me the real information you know from experience.

I'm a newbie preparing my mind for what's ahead.

Thank you.

Not an OTR driver but I know Verizon offers broadband wireless internet wherever their cell phones work for $60 a month.

I am a cheap skate so I do not pay for interent access while on the road. I am able to get onto "open" systems at hotels and some shippers. A few truck stops actually have open wifi connections too. I believe Davis Bros does this.

I use a treo 700p to access the internet. If you have been with Sprint for a while they give you free internet. Its normally $15 a month. You can take this phone and there is a hack for PAM(phone as modem) access for free or if you are honest its $40 a month. I rarely use it so I just use the hack and steal it now and then. No sense in paying extra imo just for the capability of connecting to the laptop which I no longer carry with me in the truck because the phone does most things by itself.

verizon and sprint are the best in laptop cards as they have the better range. if your computer is set up with WIFI then staying at the larger truckstops like pilot and loves and TA you should have no problem getting access. I am a Communications Manager for a large broadcasting co...we only deal with Verizon or Sprint because of their reliability and cost...some of the others will try to charge you airtime when actually using it ontop of your monthly fee for access becareful and read the small print.

I quit paying for the Flying J WiFi because I never could get a parking space. Really the laptop cards are the way to go like you are saying. I'm just cheap and I connect my phone as a modem which has identical speed to the cards. EVDO is pretty fast. Sprint and Verizon use similar technology. I get 400kbps in a high speed area. Of course there is more lag on the cell network. Wifi Is definitely better for filesharing.
