Someone proposed a plan to have the companies that they deliver to pay for the new trucks or upgrades for better emissions standards. The reason they proposed the companies to pay for it is b/c a lot of the truck drivers are owner operators and tehy say they can't afford to upgrade or get newer trucks with all their expenses, so yeah anyway that's crazy b/c i've been hearing more about that; and also with the new law that is going in effect in 2008 for all trucks 94 or older to get off the road.

this story hit home for me. my wife's cousin is a port driver in NJ and i cannot figure out why he continues working for peanuts. he can get any LTL job he wants but he chooses to stay at this low paying job. that job really doesn't pay. after all of your costs, your broke. i understand being your own boss may feel great but , at what cost ? co.'s that don't make any money go out of business. that truck is your co. and if it don't make any $$$$, guess what ??? i will never figure this out. if the Teamsters can step in and change things, great, however that's an uphill battle. not to mention some of the unsafe things (falsifying log books, running overweight, running past your hours, etc. ) these guys do just to get extra work.
