Gps Questions??????????

If one was to buy a gps unit which unit would be recomended?? I'm leaning towards a garmin nuvi series but I'm open to suggestions. The area I run is pretty big and for me to update my maps it would probably cost around $150. That's almost halfway to owning a Gps unit!!
