Therefore, trucking companies insist on it as part of their desire for unrealistically fast schedules for delivery of goods.

The article also forgot to mention how much more likely it is for people to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at night. As well as how that activity increases on weekends. I found this link with some interesting figures:

DUI Statistics

The article is a free advertisement for a ambulance chasing lawyer if you get right down to it.

That sounds logical, however, I have often called a fellow driver or friend, using my cell phone and while driving, just to help me stay awake and alert. I would rather us my CB but often I'm out of range of another driver. It has helped me on many occassions to get safely back to my home terminal on a long night. I know most people would disagree and say I should stop and rest but then I work for UPS and they just say it is my responsibility to get proper rest. In theroy I agree, however, I work all night and it is sometimes quite difficult to obtain proper rest during the day no matter how hard I try. This is just reality.

Back in the day when I drove sleepy.
I used to open the drivers window about half way,and really crank up the gosple music, singing along at the top of my lungs.
If anyone noticed me driving like that they would think I was a raving lunatic.
But it got me where I was going.
