auto transport can be a good paying job, but you need experience first, usually driving some other trailers, like vans, or reefers. i never saw an ad for inexperienced drivers hauling cars....

as for your home life, right now, your wife needs you to help take care of the baby. and you will be probably going over the road for a few weeks at first to gain your experience. YES, this will put a strain on your home life, plus, you will MISS OUT on seeing your baby, making you homesick, and possibly quitting your job.

i'd rather recommend that you get a local class B driving job. you'll work some long hours daily, but you'll be home to be with your young family.

you really NEED to talk this over with your wife, we ain't living with you, she does.....

if she gets overwhelmed by the taking care of the baby, shure, she can call her mother, or maybe your mother for help, but i think she will take out her frustrations on you when you get home.....

I'll tell you, it's tough. I only lasted 2 months OTR before getting lucky and finding a local gig. I have a small daughter and being away from her made me sick. It was also very hard on my wife who thought she could take it. Her dad drove OTR when she was young (and he still does).

Besides, getting paid by the mile is a hose job. Getting paid by the hour is where you want to be. Or a nice linehaul job getting paid hub miles. Living at truck stops and off ramps is no way to live. Sleeping in your own bed is the way to go. That is just my opinion though. There are a lot of drivers out there that love it and have families at home. A majority of drivers would tell you that truck driving and family life don't mix well.

Best of luck.

man i will tell ya if ya own your own and want to have a good family life its real tough. any driver will stay out a little longer to make more money. lets say you have a bad week and you fall into some good deals , good payin loads....you will stay out.. lets say you have a killer week and if you stay in an area that your in you will get more good payin frieght... you will stay out. my wife and i have always put up with me being a road driver. owning my own truck ruined me finacially and the resentment that my wife has still is something we work through even today. its not worth it. hats off to those familys that do it
