| | Your Social Security card
mods, move this thread elsewhere's if you need to:
many of you MIGHT know this, but we cannot have our Social Security cards laminated. i had mine laminated when i was in my teen's, and i'm 50 something now.
my state is requiring us to show our SS cards whenever we re-new our licenses, CDL or not, don't matter. you must show SS card.
the ACLU is fighting this requirement. the state is saying something along the lines of, "anti-terrorism" or "illegal alien" and "proof of a valid SS card"..........
how the fight with the ACLU and the state is going, i don't know. where i live don't matter either.
NOW, i did some "googling", and apparently, our SS cards have securithy features printed into them, so that if anyone were to monkey around with them, it would show up....
NOW, all these years, my state NEVER required a SS card for your driver license re-newal, or first time license.........
i can understand making sure everyone is "legit"..............
BUT all these years, and now, my state requires a SS card, that is NOT laminiated.
check with what you havenow, and your state requirements regarding showing your SS card at re-newal time.
i went today, to get a "duplicate" card. spent over 1 hour at the SS office........
people behind me were talking about how they needed to get a new card.
later this year, i got to take the friggin fingerprint background check, again...
then take the hazmat test.
i would have been very unhappy if i found out then, i needed a new SS card.........
here is a link, scroll down, they mention lamination. Social Security Numbers SSN, Social Insurance, FAQ and Trivia on Life in the US and North America for Immigrants and Visitors from Garamchai.Com | | | |

If you were a Mexican national, you could choose your name and birth place, fork out about $150 - $200 for a CDL and Passport in that name, cross the border, then go truckin' cross the USA, without worrying about getting a single ticket. You just don't know how to make the system work for you driver.

| | I laminated mine too in my teens, when I went to orientation at PFG a lady told me its not supposed to be covered, she said it says on the card, I could not find it on mine, I told her had I not laminated it it would be dust by now, thats a stupid rule, did they charge you for a new ss card? If so that may be the reason not to cover it, they know everyone will have to get a new card every so often if they carry theirs like I do. I am just blowing and going, I get agravated, the CDL wasn't generating enough money anymore so our gov. invented the haz-mat background crap, I am letting mine drop off I refuse to pay through the nose for that junk plus pay double because I have a CDL, screw that I won't haul haz-mat anymore!! |

| i agree, i thought it was a good idea to laminate it, as it actually protects the card from damage. when i laminatedn mine however, i did it my self, by going to a store and buying a sheet of laminating paper, and applying it myself. needless to say, this is why the edges are all "tatthered"... | NO, absolutley no charge.....!! we are entitled to (i belive) up to 3 duplicate copies per year if we need a new card. you just go online to this site: Social Security Number and Card
and click onto the "replacement card" link.
then print up the application. there will be 5 pages to print, but you only need the application, page 5.....
fill it out, then go to your local SS office, make sure you have a photo ID like your license, "maybe your birth certificate as well" ( i took mine, but they didn't ask to see it) and you'll have to wait in line (sorry, typical gov BS). it'll take about 2 weeks for your duplicate to arrive. | no, the reason not to laminate it is because there is security ink and hidden security features printed onto the cards. if anyone were to mess with the card, to falisfy the card, the security built into the card would become exposed, rendering the card useless to anyone else, if they had to show it to someone, say for instance, to obtain a loan, or credit card, or even a job, IF someone stole your card Quote: |

i can only partially agree with you on dropping the hazmat. you for instance, haul groceries......i don't..... i haul whatever, so i got to "be prepared" for any job situation. BUT.....when it comes time for me to retire, like anyone else, i will still have to renew my license. i will renew my CDL-A, (just not the hazmat then) as it'll be good for 5 years. the "ordinary" driver's license in my state, goes for 5 years as well, then every 2 years at the age of 70.........so i'll save a bit of money, PLUS, keep myself available for any "quick-bucks" i can make doing a quick run once in a while. unless i hit the lottery, then i won't care anymoe.....!!
hey, i've been trying lately to give some really good help here....and in many of my other posts.........
now i'm sheephisly asking..........
how about some "good rep points".....???
thanks
