i know about the various positions like,
1) residential pick-up (some are union if the city is union, they contract with) BFI did this
2) roll-off
3) front-end loader(?) |
I can tell you from what i know in the chicagoland area.Allied waste brought out bfi a few years back. Waste management is one of three competitors we have here. The drivers positions are port o let, residential pick up which is garbage, recycler,or yard waste. Then you have commercial. The senior drivers will be your roll-off guys. The transfer station have semi driver to haul 48 footers to the landfills.
The transfer station have front end loaders(bull dozers). The garbage trucks are called front or top loaders also.
Chicagoland have the same contract for most of it.Different company different rules. One strike we all strike. The pay is usually the same, but chicago area gets a buck more. The scale pay is $25.30 to $26.30.Residential will work around 50 hours a week.Commercial and roll-off can work 6 days a week or 60 hours max.The contract we have now, we get split $1 raise a year.It doesn't matter what driving position you have,it pays the same. The port o let pays less i think.Benefits vary from companies. The medical and dental is fully paid by the company and provided thru Teamster H&W.$100 family deductible and no co-pay.It a 80/20 out of network or 90/10 in network. The company pay into our pension also.25 or 30 years and out.
Break down individual jobs.Residential pick up your garbage guys(solid waste) routes consist of 600 to 800 houses a day.Its heavy and nasty. Some lifts are manual load or toter pick up.
Recycler have 800 to 1200 houses a day.Manual load 15gals to 30gals bins.Some have toter or mech arm pick-up.
Yard waste have an average of 600 stops a day.Pick up brush piles and yard bags.
Port o let is a sh!tty job.
Semi drivers get paid by the hour in some location or by the load which range around $100 a load.A driver can get two to three load a day(it varies).
Different states different pay and bennies. The south pays about half and pay scale. The southern region can have two drivers to a truck.Chicagoland area have 1 driver to your assign truck.Unions varies also from states and regions.
Once you in you can play musical chairs with all the garbage companies since we operate from the same union. You will lose seniority, but your pay and bennies will stay the same. You will have yo go thru 90 day trial period if you jump ship.If a company get outbid by a competitor, the guys that will get laid-off more likely will move over to the company that got the bid.
