Default Surrendering CDL to customers?

This is becoming more frequent lately. Does anyone know the legality of whether I, as a company LTL driver, have to provide my drivers license to a $10.00 an hour "rent a cop" security person when asked to do so in order to gain access to a customers location? The company I driver for is telling us that we have to. I am not comfortable doing that. Too many horror stories about identity theft. What options do I have? Has this ever been tested in court? Thanks for any help.

I would consider asking the company to provide you with photo ID for this purpose.

Just smile and say "I'll show you mine if you show me yours."

Seriously though it is becoming a big problem and I don't blame you for being reluctant to give them your DL unless the they give it right back, and don't try to photocopy it or write down the number. I might weigh the fact of what kind of business it is, is it a security risk? Something like a bonded warehouse? Someplace that what they manufacture is at risk of being photographed by the competition? Is it someplace that your company delivers to all the time? Maybe your company and the customer could make some arrangements.

If you are union ask your BA for guidance. Maybe take to the HR department in your company and to the highest management you can get to. I would put it in writing and make sure all the powers to be get a copy. Explain what your fears are and ask them if they were in your shoes would they be willing to hand off there personal ID to some cop want-to-be. What would be the consequences if you asked not to go there? (Asked not refused.) Is it worth quiting/fired over it? Remember that in most states you are considered being an "at will" employee. In other words you are free to leave and they are free to fire you for any reason.

As far as it being legal I doubt if there is any law against it. It is their property and they can deny access to anyone they want. You could also spend a few bucks and ask an attorney but I bet it would be a waste of money.

Good Luck.

you said it best....
the company you drive for is TELLING you, that you HAVE to.........

if your company can provide photo ID's then they should........otherwise, just show rental cop your high value license he may never be able to obtain, and smile so wide when you do that...........

I never took issue with it, my DL# is not my SSN, it beats arguing with them, I used to deliver 3 resturants in a injun casino in Pocola OK, we had to surrender our DL and get one of their badges, of course we were in the back where the big money is kept, I used to walk right past the vault...I would have like to get my hands on all that tax free money, I was too embarrased to have to call the wife and tell her I was busted by indian security guards to try it though...LOL

How about "alternate" I. D.??
You know of the kind yes??, it is obtainable through Underground Magazines and Online I'm sure and resembles current I. D. and States' types and is useful in/for other venues as well.

The other idea is to simply put some Duct tape or similar over the area(s) with Identifiable info. I've done this b4 and shall some more.
I've a Passport that I don't use for anything however I may begin for I. D. purposes with of course the tape being applied to specific areas.

There's ONLY laws AGAINST having multiple Drivers' Licences however there IS NO LAW against having multiple FAKE I. D.s. of the info I have currently.
If someone wants to correct my info, please do so and provide a/the verifiable resource(s).

Thank You for Your Time.
