Default A few questions....

Hello all

I have terrible credit and also have been unemployed for about the past 4 months.

Do trucking companies check credit for company driver positions?

How about the unemployment? I read that you must have verifiable employment for the past 36 months due to DOT regulations? What is that for? To verify i wasn't off with Bin Laden or do i have a problem with this?

from lyion,hi some company's dig in to it some dont ,a criminal back ground and dmv and check is supposed to be done but its all depends on the company .most wont recent say 18 months some driving with a carrier but Ive worked for some who dont do any thing may be just look at your dmv .a dac report is done a lot with the bigger companies but if you like to avoid most the crap try to find a small company close to where you live small company like to hire drivers that live close to the terminals where they work out of. .get a physical from your local doctor and go to dmv ask for a copy of your driving record for employment .the more recent on both these will get you in the door much quicker driving and making money . i wont go to a company doctor for a physical they dont no you and have no problems in failing you right away if you have any thing questionable to them where your local doctor doesnt wont to lose you as a customer that's right a customer .he or she will more in likely work with you where a company doctor will; just fail you so this is what i suggest you do ok . lyion

The background check is to see if you ran for another truck outfit and screwed up. Credit check is nothing because every truck driver by definition has an exwife, a carpayment and a girl-friend two weeks over due. Just tell the truth, and show you are willing to do a good job for a fair pay. The money will always take care of itself.

The FMCSR requires that your new employer (prospective) get 3 years safety/drug screen info from previous employers.

Also, they must look back 10 years if any job prior to 3 years ago involved driving a CMV.

Typically, criminal background checks are not performed by a company.

They may or may not do a credit check. As somebody earlier mentioned, it seems silly, since most truckers seem to be in hock up to their eyeballs anyway.

One place where a criminal background check WILL be performed is if you apply for a hazmat endorsement on your CDL. The price of the BI varies from state to state. The lowest I've seen is about $50, the highest I've seen is about $150.

If you've never driven CMV before, no need to worry about the DAC. (I'd not be too worried about it anyway - less and less attention is being paid to the DAC anyway)

I am in the same boat with you = I have *terrible* credit, and as of today, have been unemployed for more than 5 months. However, I have at least 3 job offers on the table right now with national carriers, and two local. (I had a 4th national carrier, but circumstances required that I pass on their orientation. Annoyed me no end). One way or another, I'll be going to orientation next week.

The other primary reason for verifying your employment background is the possibility of jail time. I've had a couple company people tell me that over the years when I asked. It's the cheapest way for them to find a problem with your background. (Jail..Rehab...etc would leave a rather noticable gap you cannot explain)
