Default Jevic Driver looking for work-Expediting

I tried posting this in the Jevic forum, but didn't get much of a response. HELP!

"I am looking into expediting since now I don't have a job. Does anyone know anything about this? I have a friend who he and his wife used to be leased to Panther and they seemed to do okay, but I am looking for additional info... Any help PLEASE!!"

Well, I called into Panther's recruiting dept. and talked about either buying a box truck or tractor or even driving for a fleet owner in one of these trucks. They said I could be in orientation as soon as Wednesday. I am considering going... I'll keep everyone posted...

The expedite business is going down hill rapidly, the miles are long, the freight is cheap & the costs are high. Expedite trucking IS NOT LIKE over the rd trucking, you may only get one or two runs a week & than can sit for days at a time. Many of these delivery areas are located in rural area's and you will need to deadhead to relocate mostly @ ur own expense, which will undoubtly affect the bottom line.

Expediting used to be very heavy with the automotive sector, infacr the automotive sector was nearly 50% of the business, as the automotive industry has shrunk so has the work, & the pay, that means more miles all over the country & Canada & less time home.

When buying you're first expedite truck never buy new, expedite trucks are beiung re-poed by the dozens @ the moment, you don't wanna saddle urself with a huge payment & no money.

Also when specing one get a liftgate, & an apu, they cost more now buy will pay forthemselves in the long run. Also purchase a truck with an extanded warrenty on the motor, as far as motors go, while I like the CAT 3126, many people don't & it's under powered if not tuned right, Cummins motor with the FS6spd is the way to go, STAY AWAY FROM THE SPICER 7SPD IT'S TERRIBLE. Some trucks come with Automatics, but bbeaware vthose trannies can cosr almost a much as a remaned engine.

as far as expeditevtruck dealers, stay away from Alumibunk they suk. Ellunbaum truck sales are very good, they have an excellent selection of used expedite trucks, quite a few repos to, you can always tell when a truck is repoed because it has the companies lettering still afixed to the truck, many of these companies require removal of there signs b4 they will release escarow money.

Keep in mind many expediters can spend weeks to months on the road, driving single may not be the best option, teams are the way too go.

I honestly can't sit here and tell you getting envolved in expediting is a wise move, or which company is good to run for, I personally think they all suck *** right now. I don't think it is right now, but if u feel it's right than go for it, but always remember you were warned.

Good luck bro.

like the other guy above my post suggested, watch out...........

i was going to join Panther as well, as a driver for an owner of the rig..........

i didn't take the job as i was told that YES there WILL be freight going out someplace, but i'd be sitting for a bit waiting on a load that won't neccessarily bring me back home.............and when i DID get home, since he had another driver, i could be sitting at home waiting for a load going back out again.......

best bet here if you can, is to trya and get on with FedEx instead........

and DO NOT buy a new truck as was suggested by the other poster. look for a good used one..........DO NOT EXPECT to make big dollars right away, your fuel, insurance, taxes, and other bills will take a huge chunk out of your first several settlements.......

just because you lost your job at Jevic doesn't mean the time is right for you to start your own business.........i'd find work elsewhere's till things stabilize. don't forget, there were many issues that caused Jevic to fail..........if you aren't business savvey, you can fail quicker than you think. to be in the expedited business, you MIGHT need a co-driver so you can get home to do another run. are you even right now financially set up to hire on someone else....??????

Thanks guys for the feedback. I am talking to a fleet owner who owns trucks at both Panther and Fedex. I am supposed to be meeting up with him this weekend. I see going this route as a possible way to see if expediting is what I want without having to buy a truck. I'll keep ya posted. Also, I am trying to talk my wife in joining me on the road. The owner said that we could make a lot more money.
