Tell me something. I parked beside a truck the other night and he had his apu running and it was so noisy and it "stunk". The exhaust or fumes from it was making me sick and I finally had to get up and find me another spot to park. So, the question that I would like answered is, why are those units so noisy and loud, plus why isn't the exhaust piped through the exhaust on the truck so that the exhaust can be expelled into the air??

Before I would go and spend 7 to 10 thousand dollars on this type of junk, I would certainly be investigating other ways to cut down on my idling.

Amen. Yeah, APUs are saving fuel but they're twice as loud and 5x more polluting as just idling.

No answer for you but I know what you mean about the "stink." I parked beside a Wal-Mart truck who had his apu running and got seriously gassed within 5 minutes! His exhaust was shooting out the passenger side right under my truck. My eyes were burning and watering due to this exhaust.

I too had to move to another spot.

The only viable alternative to a diesel fired apu would be an electronic apu with heavy duty batteries to last at least 10 hours without draining the trucks batteries.

I think California has the right idea about not allowing the diesel powered apu's, the exhaust I was subjected to by that Wal-Mart truck convinced me it was NOT a good alternative.

Do you have verifiable statistics to back up your claims?
Twice as loud as what, a Reefer Unit??
How can a SMALLER ENGINE which is BURNING LESS FUEL be 5x or ANY times MORE polluting than just Idling a larger engine??
Do you have any Graphs and or Charts for clarification or are you just trying to inflate a Balloon??

How dare you come at me with that tone. I'll not prove my opinions to you unless you're willing to fund the project.

If you're that bothered by it then look it up yourself. See if you think that a tiny muffler on a lawn mower engines does anything compared to the stack of today's modern semi tractor. Perchance you will concede that the stack rises above the sleepers of you and your neighbors' and the apu exhaust does not. Maybe you will admit a lot of money, research, and development has been poured into developing tractor exhaust systems to meet modern emission requirements.

I want you to leave me alone now. You don't play well with others. I'm sure you poison others nightly with your exhaust and would be more than willing to pop someone in the nose if they said anything to you about it.

Considering there's no emissions regulations for non-drive-unit engines, it wouldn't be hard to believe. It definetly wont be equipped with a catalytic converter and there's nothing stopping noxious gasses from coming out...
