Default MPG and an auto tranny??

Can you folks who have a automatic transmission tell me if mileage is better with one? I hear autos are 6 speeds so I figure they are tach'ing higher so less milage?? How do they behave on hills?? would you rather go back to 10 or 13 speed??

Just curious.

the two trucks i drove had 10 speed automated shift transmissions.

fuel economy was pretty good as it takes away from the driver over-revving the engine or lugging it down too far.

i cannot remember the specific mpg's.

but i'm still old fashion.....i'd rather have a manual.

autos slip, that is just how there made, they will get less when both are driven the same.

Also when put on a dyno an auto sends less power to the ground becuase of the slippage.

I prefer to stir my own porrige, I have driven both, autos might be good on the highways of the USA, I am afraid they leave a lot to be desired on our crappy & hilly roads. I out I drove was in a International 9800 it was to slow at changing in the hills, hell I could have made 3 changes to it's one, but hey one mans meats another mans poison .

Cheers Ray down under.

Are your sure? Sounds like your talking about Michigan roads.

I have never been to the USA but have seen movies & pictures of your roads, & beleive me cobber you would hate to drive on our roads, State highway 1 is the main road in the North Island & is one lane each way with an occaisional passing lane, the lane widths just allow two trucks to pass with inches between mirrors in alot of places. The roads out here have not changed much in 30 yrs, but the amount of traffic has changed by 100 times. My Dad was from Michigan (Ishpeming) he has been dead now coming up 50 yrs, I have seen some weird trucks with all sorts of axle configs running in Michigan, well safe trucking to you all.

Cheers Ray down under.
