Default Need pros & cons of Leas/Operator vs Company Driver

Please take the time to give me the pros and cons, horror stories both sides so my husband can make an informed decision on whether to go company or lease/operator. He graduates his training and is supposed to get his own truck Thursday be it company or lease. I will fax him your comments Wednesday evening. The only info he has is the hype that PRIME is pushing at him.

Those of you who have been there, done that, help me guide him. He is not going to listen to a wife. Never has so why should he start now. But you guys he might.

Linda

There is a thread titled "lease purchase programs good or bad and why?" in the newbie trucking questions and answers section that deals with this very topic.

DON'T BUY A TRUCK FROM ANY COMPANY UNDER THE GUISE OF LEASE TO OWN!!
Those Trucks have been owned previous times and have been sold as many. There are quite a lot of Companies that will be more than glad to set someone up in a Lease to own "plan" only to have the Lessor get stuck at some point because of lack of mileage or breakdown or related and the Company that did the Lease "plan" only wants and will demand payment be rendered despite conditions that prevail. Also many have defaulted on their "loans" and the Trucking Company has taken control of the Truck only to "offer" it to another VICTIM!! There is an O/O Company in Minneapolis-St. Paul that was real good for this as they have/had their own Truck store/lot.

There ARE MANY TRUCKS setting on Truck Lots because of People that thought the O/O route was the way to go only to discover quickly that it wasn't.
When Leasing, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL REPAIRS TO SAID TRUCK and YOU BUY ALL FUEL!! If this sounds like a good idea then go ahead.

Start out as a Company Driver in order to acclimate to this Business/Profession!!
One can then discover ALL the aspects of becoming an O/O for the Lease Purchase "plan".
Unless one is financially independent, DON'T START YOUR PROFESSION by starting out in a Hole!!

Company Driver is best for now because there may be things one will not agree to with the particular Company, then one is able to cleanly sever ties without the "You can't take your Truck with you elsewhere" line.

ANYONE can make a small fortune in Trucking if they begin with a large one.

DO NOT buy a truck for your first job.

DO NOT buy a truck from the company you want to drive for.

DO NOT buy a truck that has been driven by a company driver before, unless you know them or have driven it for a period of time.

DO NOT buy a truck that is a "good deal". there are no deals in this industry. if a truck is cheap, there is a reason for it.
