Trucking With Wife: Anyone?

Hello All,

In about six months, my wife and I may be on the road together. Anyone here done it for any length of time?

I'd love to hear from other's who are (or were) trucking with a spouse. No need for "Don't do it's"--it's a choice we've made, and now we'd like to start developing ties with others doing the same thing.

I've been driving with my man for 9 months, we're breaking up, but not over trucking..
we've learned a lot more about each other, the quality time is great, and we had lots of time to talk more than the normal couple, and learn about each other on a deeper level. I hope privacey isn't a big issue, because you will have none..LOL Tell your wife that the big plastic 44 ounce cups from TA will become her best friend when there is no rest room around (no joke, stack up on them..LOL)

It is great teaming up with your significant other. In my case it has taken me 18 years to get my wife to join me (this had to do with the kids being too young to leave at home alone rather than any actual resistance from her). She has always been willing to follow me where ever I led. This is based on trust, love, and respect for 1 another.

In our case we have alot of debt and I needed her to join me so we could take advantage of my companies new team division. The fact that all the money goes into 1 joint account has been very rewarding so far.

I paid for the training for her to attend a local truck driving school for a moth. After she graduated, my company allowed me to personally train her for 6 weeks while paying her a hundred dollars per day, me 30.00 per day for training (plus the mileage pay) and even paid for a hotel each night for us. At the end of the 6 weeks she and I were automatically upgraded to team status and started splitting .47 cpm. We split the accessorial pay down the middle, so between the mileage pay and accessorials we are making between $2200.00 to $2800.00 per week. This is much better than my solo earnings which were around $1350.00 per week for 5 to 6 days work.

We enjoy each others company but do not necessarily agree on everything. This actually creates some interesting discussions at times and I have found myself looking at her from a different perspective. For some disagreements we simply "agree to disagree" and leave the subject alone.

She really dislikes the job and hates driving but she is out here anyway. We do see progress on our debts (even though other things keep "popping up"). She takes over when I am tired and together we are able to cover about 800 to 900 miles per day consistently.

We rarely will pull an all nighter as neither of us can sleep while the truck is moving and bouncing down the highway. Instead, my company has put us on a dedicated route that does not have rigid time constraints. This permits us to put in 16 to 18 hours per day and then sleep together.

Regrettably the beds are too narrow in the Volvo we drive to sleep together in 1 so I climb into the top bunk and let her have the bottom.

The companionship, fellowship, and intimacy created by this schedule of ours has created a stronger bond in our marriage.

I wish you the best in your upcoming road partnership. It will test your commitment to one another and unless you 2 agree to work together and respect one another it will be a trying ordeal to say the least.

although i'm a single driver, my wife is with me at all times. wouldn't have it any other way. something is sure missing when she goes to see the kids.
