Default Hypothetical Question/Hours of Service

If your boss gives you a run sheet of what needs to be done in 1 day and you realize that it will take you over 11 hours and closer to 11 1/2 hours driving. How would you handle it? What kind of recourse would you have if you were retaliated against?

I've already given my answer to a co-worker but I am going to print out all the responses so he can make decide who to beleave. Thanks in advance to all those who respond.

If it was a one time deal and they ran me legal most of the other times I would probably do it. If you are expected to run illegal alot you have to keep in mind that if you are caught you are the one that will be paying the fine and it's your license that is in jeopardy.

well since we can only "legally" drive for 11 hours, here's what i would do....

if there are several deliveries or pick-ups in the same city/town, then i stay on line 4 "on duty, not driving"......this may only be a matter of 15 minutes or a half hour of actual driving time, so why log all those pick-ups/deliveries as being on line 3...??? we can be on duty a total of 14 hours, so to use up some "on duty not driving" time is worth it.

as a driver, we all want perfection......we ain't gonna get it.....

sometimes we have to do things, like get "creative" in our log book....

because we ALL KNOW, that when WE WANT SOMETHING, like a day off or to be home for an appointment, the company (in most instances) accomodates us. it cannot all be take, take take.....and no give......

then too, unless you have actually done the run, you really don't know the EXACT amount of time it'll take you....right now, you're going on "suppositions".........(definition) "the act of supposing"......

If your dispatcher wants you to run illegal and you get caught, or have an accident, then its your ***** thats on the line. If you start doing it once in a while then they will come to expect you to do it all the time ......my advice.... run legal and protect your license, especially if you are a new driver. If the company retaliates for not running an illegal load call DOT and start looking for a new job ... just remember your license and DAC report is the most important thing and the company doesn't care if you dirty them up ..........

while what you say is true, the original poster may not really know the EXACT amount of time its going to take...i mean look at it this way, if a "normal run" takes 10 hours, but one day there is a massive accident, and you can't get off the highway or take another surface street, you're STILL on line 3 (driving) right...??

yes, i do agree that many times a dispatcher WILL expect you to do it over an over again.....BUT do we really know if the original poster is going to go over the 11 hours of driving time...yet...???? he still hasn't even done the run yet, as his question(s) were "hypothetical"...in nature......

and then again, MANY times a dispatcher will remember when you helped him/her out....

i'm just a driver myself.......but to NOT find a way to work this out for a mere half hour is bothersom to me........

if the original poster cannot work this out by himself, then this amounts to either a "newbie" or a "take, take, take" attitude, and not a "giver" when its requested......once in a while....

for a mere half hour....???????

c'mon......even the "newest" of all "newbies" can work that out.....

In the ORIGINAL POST of ltlloveaffair, the TITLE is Hypothetical Question/Hours of Service.
Hypothetically speaking, one can work beyond that which is designated not for others.
If I were retaliated against in a Hypothetical situation, I would verily summon the help of Virtual Reality Goons to quell the problem.
Hypothetical reasoning is akin to Theoretical posturing and hold NO ground in what is perceived to be Reality, therefore your question hasn't a definitive answer in the current Time/Space Continuum, however I would allow the reasoning of pro1driver as fact and conclude the Hypothetical question as being answered regardless.

...end of line...
