Mostly useless in todays electronic trucks. In the old days they were used to keep track of your exhaust temperature exiting the turbo. When climbing a hill or pulling under a heavy load the driver would watch to make sure the temp. did not exceed a certain level. If the exhaust temp. went too high, the driver could downshift to increase the motor RPM thus decreasing the exhaust temp.

In today's trucks, the pyrometer is just another pretty gauge on the dash. There is some use for it, but most trucks monitor the temperature and will defuel or shut down before any damage occurs.

On older Petes and K-Whoppers (and other Makers of Trucks) there were Gay Jess (okay, Gauges) to monitor Trans temp, and both Drive Axles in addition to a Pyrometer, Oil Temp Gauge, Coolant/Water Temp Gauge, Fuel, Volts/Amps.

I would rather have Gauges than Idiot Lights.

I hear you on that,I am driving an auto shift volvo(not my truck)it has limited gauges, and a small digital screen with info that I have to acess with a button on the wiper arm.I would rather be able to glimpse over at a gauge ie;trans temp or whatever and go back to driving rather than fooling around and removing my attention from the road.
