Default There has to be a better way to get experience.

It seems that people assume the only way to get experince is to work for some crappolla outfit they found in a truck magazine.
There has got to be a better way.

I started with Old Dominion Freight Line, out of Carlisle,PA. They weren't perfect but I felt I was in better shape starting out with them ,than some BS OTR that only paid 26 cpm. At OD you start out on the wild board, run terminal to terminal (easy locations on most of them). You run Daycabs and pull doubles & at the end of your shift they put you up in a hotel (not necessarily the Hilton). I was getting home 1 -2 times aweek plus 2 day off for a weekend (not always sat & sun). Some days you might do a meet and turn, where you meet a driver from another terminal, switch sets and come home. OD in non-union , but I always worked and never stayed home as a result of no work! Also some of these companies try to give you a screwin' on your DAC report when you terminate employment. OD did not do this. Check um out ,keep in mind my location in PA makes it quite easy to get driving work, I know some of the better jobs are tough to come by in some parts of the country... Don't become a victim to some "Sweatshop on wheels"..

22 yrs ago when I started it seamed to be the only real way to get experience.I ran a few small mom and pop regional OTR companies to get experience.I hated OTR and after 4 yrs started doing local including running trash and anything else to keep me home.It does take time to get experience though,no way around that.
