Default Log Book

I am a new driver and I have a question about log books.

If I break up my 10 hour down time into a 2 hour and a 8 hour break, does that extend my drive time by 2 hours then 8 hours?

this is one of the most complicated things to do on the log book and keep up with the clock.

Old blue USA has a slideshow on how to do it but I don't advise you to do it its complicated and do you really want to rely on an underpaid rookie state patrols math skills to keep you out of an OOS violation.

heres the link www(dot)olblueusa(dot)org/CDL&CMVSafetyInfoCenter/HOS2005(dot)html

the link is a slide show from the Nebraska state patrol and explains how to log I hope this help

In a 'corner' of Werner's website I found an interesting explanation of how you could THEORETICALLY repeat the 20 HOUR sequence: DRIVE 5HRS, REST 2HRS, DRIVE 5HRS, SLEEP 8 HRS, indefinitely until you ran out of hours for the week [70 or 80]. Sounds like a [very tiring] way to defeat the purpose of the HOS rules.

Default 10 hr break.

New driver, don't listen to all those people telling you to split up your break. You must take 10 hours off in a row for it to be a legal break. Do it that way and you will not have any problems with the D.O.T or you safety dept at your company. Its all about trip planning. Do it and it will make your life alot easier out on the road.

The answer is "NO"!

Now! Take some advice from an old driver. Ever since the HOS were changed and the "split sleeper berth" was made so a lawyer could hardly understand it, I completely stay away from even attempting to "split". So, you being a new driver, you are only asking for trouble. My advice, stay away from trying to "split" hours. When we were allowed to drive 5 and then take 5 off and then drive 5 more and so-forth and so-on, it was simple to "split", but it ain't simple anymore. I even know trucking companies who have put out bulletins to their drivers to stay away from "split logging",

If you are going to take 8 hours off, why not just take 2 more and have your legal 10 hours off????

Default Don't do it for sure

Down here in New Zealand the log books are similar to your rules in some ways like the 10 hr break, you have to be so careful the slightest mistake means a big fine & loss of license for 1 month, no ifs, buts, or maybes.
One mistake drivers out here would do is have there break & count there hours forwards, when the God Squad (truck cops) checked your book, they always counted the hours backwards & you lost an hour, BINGO please except this ticket sir & enjoy your months unpaid leave. Through experience I have learnt to play by their rules, the have all the money & the power, but I must say the majority of the Police were good mannered, only the odd power crazy Rat bag.

Cheers Ray down under
