Question Getting Into the business!! ??

Im 20 years of age out of Montgomery michigan.
I currently called some truck driving schools and the secretary of state.
the lady from the secretary of state said I dont have to take the schooling, She said I Could just come down and take the written test and the road test for my Class A CDL to drive a semi.
Mk well first of all I would like to know if trucking is a good job to get into, I would like to know from some actual real ppl instead of companys that will lie to you.

I know your in your truck all the time, drive/eat/sleep..ect, and I know it gets boring, You shower at rest areas and having to keep to log books even though its illegal, MANY DO and HAVE to witch I know and have seen for my self.
take a load from michigan to flordia and they can send you from flordia with a load to new york so I know your in your truck alot. my dad use to drive a truck and I would like information from EVERYONE besides my father and Companys.
also do you pay the ticket IF you get pulled over for your truck being over weight or does the company pay that ?

Average pay ?
Average pay per mile ?
Average pay per week ?

realize that this information you ppl are giving me is for someone who is wanting to get into driving semi.
dont compair your average pay and experiences to what mine will be even tho you guys might not know because you ppl that have been driving for along time prolly make more then i will starting out, but WHAT I NEED IS an overall Idea of how this will benifit me*****

Reason why im wanting to start driving semi is because factories dont pay much now days and IF truck driving is good pay then why not drive right ?
20 years old I know that I have to wait until im 21 until I can leave the state if MI while knowing that some companys require you to be 23 but I need to find this information out before hand.

I dont mind eating sleeping sitting in a truck all day, but I need to know if this will benifit me.

THANK YOU GUYS SOOOOOOO MUCH

you may be able to just go there and take the test, but then you NEED a truck to test with. now if your state provides the truck, you're good to go, otherwise, you had better have about $1,000 to rent one or have a friend that's willing to sacrafice his rig for your test, which could also result in a "crash" test as well, since YOU HAVE NO EXPIRENCE driving one now.

it "COULD BE" a good job to get into, but i do not recommend it at all.

well i for one "EAT" at the resturants and truck stops...not in my cab, unless its a snack.

well first, YOU DO NOT shower at rest areas, as they do not have showers......i think you meant truck stops...right...?? what about logbooks...they are illegal...??? who told you that load of crap....??

its illegal if you DON'T HAVE ONE that's up to date and correct.......while OTR, city drivers "may not" be required to have one, under certian circumstances.

that's right, but you DO GET OUT every so often too, you're not chained in there after all.

if he is talking you OUT OF the business, then LISTEN to him.....he's your first source of information....

sometimes yes, sometimes no.........if you run witha load that's overweight, and you do not call your company, its "assumed" everything is ok, and you accepted that responsibility.

"about" $800-900 per week for newbies.
"about" .27¢ to .35¢ for newbies
add up the miles for the pay, that vaies, but "about 2,000 miles to 2800 miles for a newbie.

that's right, as a newbie, there are way too many variables, like the company that hires you. and so on, and so forth.....

WRONG, just because factories don't pay squat, doesn't mean there aren't ANY JOBS out there that DO PAY WELL.....do not for one minute think that driving a truck is the answer to MONEY, because it ain't. its a different lifestyle, that comes with so many inconvienences you could ever imagine.

that's what you are saying now...........you haven't done it yet, at least NOT on a daily basis like we do, and for the years we've done it.......

I got into it to try to earn money for college. But these damn companies want so many hours out of you, even if you are local or linehaul, that it's impossible.

I did OTR after being local for 9 years. At least in KC, experience means little. Being someone's brother does. 6 months of OTR drove me nuts. Worked so much that normally the truckstop restaurants were closed by the time I got done for the day, and I was usually eating those Landshire sandwiches, which I still can't look at anymore. Good luck getting normal food on the road. I'd go without a shower for up to four days because, contrary to popular belief, you're not always going to be stopping at the same truckstop chain each night, which means you can't use the coupon from your last fuel, and a lot of truckstops don't even have showers.

Hope you're not into reading like I am, because you won't have time.

That's a miserable lifestyle. I can do it, but I always felt just about like I wanted to shoot myself doing it, because I was chained to the job 24 hours a day.

The only way I could see a person enjoying that job is if they don't like to read, don't like to bathe, and like to eat junk food. In other words, a total frigging slob.

this from your first post:

spelling is really important, but if you use the wrong word(s) as in this case the word "to" instead of "TWO", how is anyone supposed to know what you are saying....you could have been saying the word "to" as a mistake or repeat of your thoughts.....gotta try and be more specific....i go on the INFORMATION I READ, NOT ASSUMED......!!!

and as far as taking two log books, that's something if done by the company, the driver from there has at least two choices.....either refuse or quit....a trucking company CANNOT ORDER you to break the law....AND IF a driver does accept that as company policy, the driver is in fact KNOWINGLY breaking the law too....and the company will not stand behind him if he crashes. i support NO DRIVER that runs knowingly, with two log books. he should know better.....

next, you said rest area.........for the shower. you had time to "proof read" your post before you submited it, for editorial reasons....

if you say one thing, but "meant something else", how are we supposed to know....??? we go by what's posted, we are not "meant to know what you are saying" people.....

one of the reasons why i got into trucking is, i was burnt out from my previous career and wanted something that didn't require too much of a financial investment, that would pay me back in good time and support my family. but if i could roll back the calendar i would, then go into something else......like plumbing or electrical contracting, or even HVAC. i wouldn't want to do this again.........
