Default Mack Quantam

Do you get these Mack's in the USA ? They are a French Renault with Mack badges & the Mack 470 engine, & 18 spd R/R box, some people don't like them cos they are not real Mack's, I drove one as a tractor unit pulling a quad axle refridge unit, I quite liked it, it had the European comfort with American horsepower, 500/550hp would have been nicer.[IMG][/IMG]

Hello, kiwiray as far as I know there are no class8 [heavy duty] Cab-over engine tractors being sold in North America for at least 3or4 years the last one being sold here was the Freightliner argosy. The sales were pretty disapointing. It may have been marketed in Oceana also.

Hi DayliteDave

I had an Argosy quad axle tractor you can see a pic of it in the Big Thread under show us your ride, there's also a pic of my sons Argosy. Cab overs are popular down here because of length with trailers.

Cheers kiwiray

Mack/Renault only sent crappy class 6 and 7 to the US.
I think the last year Mack had a cab over in the US was @ 1988-9,in class 8.
From what I've heard Volvo is now pushing their engines in the Mack chassis, they gotta do something with all bad engineering Renault put into the mack trucks and engines.
Not that it was all bad, part due the american style of driving and being used to low rpm high torque engines.

But back on subject, in most cases I'd still rather have a cab over verses a conventional. Just don't understand having to be cool with a big conventional and have to jockey around for 20 minutes just to get in and out of some places.

It's more of a safety thing than a status symbol unless one is a cowboy.
The Nose provides greater safety as opposed to none of a Cabover.
Most places are not that big uv a deal with a Conventional, where some places would be easier with a Cabover.

I like seeing Cab Overs OTR, just not me driving one anywhere.

Were I in Europe, New Zealand or Australia I would have little choice, however there ARE Conventionals in Australia.

COE's were great when I was a rookie driver.Places that were problems to get into with a COE and a 42ft trailer,10 years later I could back a conventional with a 53 footer into no sweat.Companies that use low skilled drivers[I don't need to name them]would be well served to use them. That said,COE's rode rather worse than a conventional, the cabs were generally noisier, and hotter, not to mention you slept over the engine it made sleeping in a team operation more difficult and as a solo you always had to have the A/C running tosleep in the summer.
