Well some couunties out near where I live have CDL training programs for low income qualified people, so you might look into that where you live. Before that, you will need a fairly clean MVR and background check or you will be wasting time or money on your endevor to become a rig driver. Good luck to you!

If you have any past DUI's or DWI's or a felony conviction or a criminal record, a history of speeding tickets, any accidents with injuries I suggest you look into another career.

If you have none of the above, check into the closet vocational schools that offer CDL training, find out the cost and requirements.
Get a couple of jobs and save the cash. Get your CDL and then apply for local outfits even if you have to start at on the docks.

Steer clear away from ANY over the road companies that offer CDL training. There is always a catch, you will never last the alloted years required to NOT have to pay them back. you will work for free and get screwed. Your DAC report will be ruined and you wont be able to get a driving job after that.

Let me repeat..DO NOT go to through any over the road company sponsored CDL training...

Hello,

Have you considered other opportunities available as in Job Corps or Sierra Club to name 2?? Camp Counselor (requires Schooling in College though), other areas like Cook, Chef, etc.., Trail Guide and what not.
Trucking is not the ONLY opportunity for those considering Career changes, it is merely A Opportunity to those that are qualified to do so.
Trucking is not for the feint of heart as it requires agility and perseverance along with the need to WANT TO DO IT.
Like every other demanding Profession, one has to want to want it or it isn't to be desired or enjoyed.
If one just wants the paycheck then trucking is not a good choice.

I'm not trying to discourage anyone, just mentioning a few things I've learned along the road of Life.

Contrary to what princess has stated, Company sponsored Truck Driving Schools/Academies are not to be ignored. Vocational training has been mentioned as well and there are State proven/provided programs available such as in North Carolina called JobLink. Different States have different or similar names of their programs. They provide free training and placement to low income People and is a possibility which one should not avoid investigating. There are current Owner Operators that have started with State sponsored programs.

I have never driven for or applied to Schneider nor am I a Recruiter for ANY Trucking Company however I have before (in other threads) and do suggest you check :: Pumpkindriver Homepage :: for one Company website that WILL ANSWER questions you have regarding driving opportunities. Not everyone at this site drives for or is employed in any way with Schneider however most of them are and have been for quite some time. That website has been around for quite some time as well.
Schneider has ads at most if not all Employment Offices regarding their Training Schedules and times of Seminars.
If you're not a Criminal and have no Felonies or DWIs, DUIs, Domestic issues, etc., within 10 years, you may very well qualify.

Opportunities ARE available in Trucking despite the cut backs and closings of Companies.

Thank You for Your Time!!
