Soon To Be New Driver Has Questions
I am entering the trucking industry after a long stint in sales. I enter trucking school at my local community college starting Oct 30. I will be finishing on December 15th and assuming I pass my tests, I will be looking for a job. I would appreciate any suggestions you can give me and I would also like to ask a few questions.
1. Do most company owned OTR tractors come equipped with a refrigerator and/or microwave? If not, do you buy your own? I ask because I am a diabetic and I have to keep my medicine (insulin) refrigerated or cooled.
2. How do you keep warm or cool when in your sleeper if you have your truck shut down? Do the sleepers have a way to power the air and/or heat without idling the engine of the tractor?
3. I have decided I want to either run vans, car carriers, or tankers. I plan to take the tests to pass the necessary endorsements, but I would like your comments on car carriers and tankers in particular.
4. I am considering starting out OTR for the experience but I want to do local driving if at all possible as soon as possible. I am ok with less money than OTR and with hourly wages instead of milage as my wife (a nurse) brings in a good amount of money and I am considering trucking as a AARP retirement job more than anything else. I would like to hear from anyone who has jobs with local/regional drives like UPS, FedEX, DHL, etc. Also, we have a very large CSX terminal near where I live that rails in a large amount of flatbed mounted trailers each day. Anybody have any experience hauling those? Whatever I do, I want to company drive, not go indie as at my age, I do not want to take on the added obligations of truck ownership and upkeep.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
