Default Couple of questions.

Hello, I will finish my CDL training in mid December. I am wondering generally what advantages / disadvantages any particular companies may have. Strongly recommend? Companies I should stay away from? A little background, I have been getting laid of earlier and earlier each year form my job as commercial construction worker / supervisor. I have one speeding about two years ago (-9 over). Clean criminal background. No drug use. Passed my CDL permit this week as well as air, hazmat, tanker, double-triple and passenger endorsements. I am in the Minneapolis /St. Paul area. I have been pre-hired at TMC and Werner, but have not committed. I would like to be home at least once or twice a week. Also, in searching future opportunities as an owner /operator I came across a few sights brokering loads such as rightnowloads.com, getloaded.com, directfreight.com and others. These sites charge a membership, is this standard? Shouldn't you should pay in a commission or something? Thanks in advance for your responses.

If you want to be home look into local rail ,dumptruck, fuel oil, airport, state hiway, ups package driver for christmas season, local food disrtibuters, scrap yards, garbage

JB and Schneider are increasingly running daycabs in major cities and taking over logistics of chain stores they might work

If you sign with an OTR co you will not get home.

get loaded, internet tuckstop are pay per month sevices
they do not arrange loads with brokers and carriers
they just post loads that are available

all i can say reagrding "most" trucking companies, that HIRE from the schools, is that you WILL NOT GET HOME once or twice a week........you WILL BE OUT at least 2 to 4 weeks at a time, but then look at it this way.......its expereince you WILL GET FASTER than say if you went local right out of school. as far as "staying away" from some companies, right now with the economy being the way it is, i'd recommend going to whichever company HIRES YOU first. DO NOT PLAY the waiting game for something better to come along...........they have more applicants than just you, so THEY CAN BE CHOOSEY in whom they hire if you refuse a job.......

trucking companies have lay-off's as well, just not as often or at specific times of the year. when a company is slow, they "might" have "voluntary" lay-off's, meaning if you wanted a week or two off, they will gladly give it to you........

all of this sounds good, quite frankly......keep it up.......

once you obtain your class A CDL, it'll garner you more chances of a job, especially the passenger endorsement.

must be cold up there........?? over here (New England) we have been in a "pre-deep freeze" the past few days..
right now, COMMIT to someone.........either company is fine, just COMMIT and get that job.....

nope, nada, not gonna happen with either above company you selected.......pack your bags.........get your experience, then after 6 months to one year, look around for something else.....GET YOUR EXPERIENCE FIRST....

DO NOT EVEN THINK about being an owner-operator right now..........the information you are getting now is useless....because in the near future, everything you've read now, WILL CHANGE, including some of those websites.........which when the companies go out of business, you got to start all over again...

CONCENTRATE on getting a job first, your experience second.........then WAIT a few years BEFORE you decide to become an "owner-operator steering wheel holder"..............with HEADACHES........
