They don't do so hot with restricted routes either. I tested the CoPilot Truck GPS for my company and it didn't have any problem at all trying to send me down streets in Chicago that would have turned my truck into a convertible.
I still say common sense, your atlas, and talking to local drivers are your best bet.
I did a delivery in Chicago last year where the GPS said the street was ok for big trucks, the atlas said it was ok and I even called the Chicago number for the transit authority and THEY said it was ok. Then, just to be sure I talked to a couple of local drivers and they started laughing and let me know that Lake street (at least the section I would have been traveling) was most certainly NOT safe for big trucks. If it hadn't been for them I would have gotten myself into some trouble.
Also, if I'm not positive about a low clearance, I'm not too proud to pull over and wait until another truck goes under it before I try it.
