| | How to Record Accident in Log Book
A car hit me the other day, while I was driving the company truck. I notified the company, and called the cops to file a report. I have the time flagged, which was 1.25 hours, in the log book, but I haven't decided what, if anything to call it. So far I just have the town name there. I could write in "accident", or "police report", or just leave it blank. Since log books are so important from a legal point of view, I'm concerned about what to write there. God knows I don't want it to come back to haunt me. I was not at fault, and the police report agrees with that ( the cop didn't give me a copy of the report, just a form that lets me pay $15 to get a copy of the report after 14 days, but I got him to verbally agree I was not at fault. Driving along in the right lane when wham, the four wheeler kamikazies into me from the left. No injuries). Yeah, I could ask my employer what to write, but I don't even trust them !!!
Any ideas welcome,
Thanks,
Paranoid

Easiest way to indicate this is "MVA, location, company or police incident report #".
That way you have all your bases covered, and if there is any follow up, you have a record of the right documents to seek.

never believe what the cop says at the scene. wait till you get a copy of the report. there can still be an investigation of the accident, long after that cop leaves the scene.
and the cop may say you are not at fault.........
but now, you still have to wait for your company's determination.........

Similar incident in '04 in northern NJ. Driving right lane climbing a hill with flashers on and SUV side swipes rear trailer. Incident is cleared (paperwork and photos taken). 1.5 months later a Certified letter arrives in mail at my residence from their lawyer requesting multiple pages of personal info and driving records. I am now blamed for not having my unit under control. Fortunately, Risk Mang Dept. took it from there and again I am cleared for the 2nd time. SOOOOOO all that said, don't assume you are off the hook even when "Officer Friendly" says your not to blame.

April, '03, Northbound on I-85, Mecklenburg County, NC.
I was driving a Combo (Tractor-Trailer) with 35K in the box, entering a Construction zone, at 50-55 MPH as was posted when a 4-wheeler traveling about 25-30 MPH emerged suddenly from the Hammer Lane in front of me. I braked, drives locked, I slid a bit, released Brakes and impacted the right rear with my left front. Trooper stated "It wasn't my fault yet he had to issue a Ticket as per State requirement(s)".
I probably used some interesting wording on the log page.
Case was dropped 6-8 months later through a local Attorney.

Log it on line 4 as "accident" or MVA, and location.
