Red face Advice for Women Truckdrivers out there

It was requested that maybe there should be a forum for the newby's woman truck drivers out there so it is. And yes guys, you can add to this also. I am sure I will add to this from time to time this is just the starter.

Girls, first thing you need to do is get the right attitude.
Don't be *****y, but don't be a pushover. Have that confidence work for you. Be nice, polite and respectful and if you are like me, you won't get alot of BS out here with the other drivers or your customers.

Yeah, sometimes us women need a lil help say maybe sliding tandems or figuring out a truck problem. If you are a company driver and there are nobody around from your company, its ok to ask another driver for some help, just if they give you attitude, say "Okies, Thanks anyways" and walk away. Don't fuss back with him cuz that will get you no where.

Now, lets touch on safety in truck stops.
Simple basic stuff. Yeah you ain't always gonna get to park on the front row in the spot closest to the building door. When you get out to walk in, look around before you get out, try to time your walking in when you see others walking in also. NEVER walk between trucks! One somebody might actually be hiding there and two you might get mistaken for the commericial company and get harrassed by other drivers. Watch where you walk. Hold your head up and appear confident. Keep your keys between your fingers or if you wanna a can a mace or even a roll of quarters in your hand (yeah, it hurts if you gotta hit someone but it works).

You have two choices if someone comes up to you with bad intentions, fight or flee. Flee is always the best option, so errmm pay attention, if ya gotta run in those flip flops its gonna slow ya down. And scream for help. But there may be a time when you have to fight first to flee, so know some basic self defense. All you may need is just that few seconds to get loose to run away.

I am not trying to scare you all. I don't think its as bad out here as it used to be when I first started a lil over 7 years ago. But there are some bad areas you will be going to.

And one more thing, then I will hop off the soap box for a bit, your attitude is gonna say alot about you. Appear confident but not arrogant. Let that confidence show and you will not have too many problems out here.

And yeah, if you have a question, don't be afraid to ask someone. If you get on the radio and ask, you can bet there is gonna be some aholes out there that smart off, but there is always at least one that give ya an honest answer.

Casper

Smile Newbie

we have a few women drivers at my company, a couple are owner op's in the other division. The local one's
come in and do their job, ask questions when they do not know something and go about their days like any other driver. The guys don't mind them ( there might be a few, but they wont speak up ) as long as they hold their own. We had one who went through the co driving school and in her 2 nd year now won her barn's rodeo competion & also took the Grand Champion spot in the co. over all the guy's. Next year she should be at the State rodeo's trying o get to the national's. Just try to hold your own, no accident or tickets and you should be fine.

So yeah I am really looking into truck driving... that first post is what I've thought about the most... I have got books from the library on a little self defense and am learning more from time to time... jsut hope it sticks and I remember it in a sticky situation but I am sure I will! :) I figured drive mostly during the day so that when you have to get out of your truck you can be in day light at least... and at night you dont get up to pee so you're good :P that was my thought on the subject... minus those times when you have to drive over night... how much do you actually have to drive? is it sleep drive sleep drive or what? and this ACTUALLY may be a stupid quesiton... but... can you put some sort of toilet in a truck like if you buy one? :) hehe... if you could that would be awesome! ummm right now I'm just trying to find a school to go to to learn... dont know where to go... there was this place down in springfield that said they would pay for your room and board and stuff to come down there and train for free but then you HAVE to work for them for 2 years... or you have to pay for the course which is thousands of dollars but i've heard its not too good of a school....

Basically I just need to know where to start...

Thanks...
