Default FMCSA Will Use GPS Data for Enforcement

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has rescinded a policy barring use of GPS records to verify compliance with the hours of service rules.

Since 1997 the agency has taken a hands-off approach to using data from advanced technologies such as GPS as an enforcement tool "in order to promote and encourage use of these new technologies by the industry."

Now that goal has been achieved, the agency said. And field staff have begun to see situations in which the hands-off policy is harming enforcement...

I thought the feds fought this and lost. I dont see how they can force trucking companies to give them access to gps logs in the Qualcom system. Qualcom is a private, proprietary service that the trucking companies pay for. There is no law that says the trucking companies have to use it (yet).
