I'm not a truck driver, but I live near a major highway, as our back yard butts-up against I-75 in Ohio. As such, we hear a number of highway sounds.
While it's surprising how "normal" the constant sound of the highway is, and how easy it is to forget it's there, I'm usually reminded of its existence when the constant swooshes of traffic-flow are broken with uncommon sounds. For example, semi engine-breaking, which is actually illegal, but that's another topic.
Of course, we all know the
loud jackhammer-like vibration sounds of a jake breaker engaging the
engine break.
Then there's that
deep explosion and industrial-sized crunching sound, accompanied by earthquake-like tremmors and a gripping fear that something might come through your windows any second. In which case was a
semi flipping onto its side in our back yard. That really happened, last fall!
But recently, I have been hearing a much stranger sound. Most notably, twice in the past two days. I'm not even sure if it actually
is coming from a semi, but I Googled to no end without success, so I thought I'd bring the query here. I'm really just curious as to what it is.
The sound is a
medium- to high-pitched beeping (as series of three beeps, repeating), not really comparable to anything else, although it could probably be a really annoying ringer on someone's cell phone. When I hear it, the vehicle is moving, so the sound comes in as high-pitched as the vehicle approaches, but the pitch changes to more medium-pitched when the vehicle passes (just as a siren would on a passing emergency vehicle). Of course, I'm never outside when I hear it. I have
no idea what it is.
Anyone got a clue what this sound is, exactly? Again, I'm not sure it's even a semi, but who knows what those crazy truckers have up the rigs' sleeves. ;)
