Default How to come back to trucking.

I will like to get back to trucking. I quit six years ago. But only drove two years. What does it take to get back?
Refresher course? A company that is willing to train me again?

Thanks in advance

Question

Hello Slimer and WELCOME TO TRUCKINGBOARDS!!

There are a few things to know before applying to Trucking Companies:
Do you have any speeding tickets, reckless driving convictions, accidents, etc. in the time since your driving experience?
How many jobs have you had since quitting driving?
WHY did you quit driving after two years?
Do you have any other negatives since your last driving experience?

Insurance companies have not changed any except they've become worse since '02 and since Trucking Companies are controlled in who they hire by their insurance carriers, well 'nuff said.
Trucking Companies as well despite what they claim in their qualifications will overlook people for mere trivial things.

Call around, check online BEFORE submitting application information.
No point in filing in apps for no reason.

Best of Luck in your ventures!!

Thank you for welcoming me.

I have no negative and certainly no Driving violation since getting my CDL.

I quit due to my wife's illness. Cancer and a transplant.
But she is fine now.

What you said about insurance companies may mean I have to go back to trucking school again then have one of those self insured companies like Stevens Transport to hire me again. I was fine with Stevens if I was single.
Hopefully just a Refresher Course is needed.
Eventually I will like to become an O/O.

You shouldn't have a problem getting back into trucking. There are a few companies that have a "Pilot Program". How that works, is that they will put you with a trainer for a week or so, just to see how fast you can "jump back in the saddle" so to speak.

Good Luck!!
Necie

Default Thank you Necie

thanks for your reply. I feel a little more confident now that you said I may need to get with a trainer. It will take no time for me to get back to driving. I just need a refresher.
I assume I would have to find big companies like JB Hunt that will retrain you. Those kind of companies I guess are the only one that can afford the Insurance.
Stevens Transport is how I got started but I will like to get away from Reefers.
