Default Me pay for new hire phys.?

I'll try to get right to the point here.
On 12-16-08 I was called in for a "new hire" physcial (bad spl),
Today is the 28th, I received a BILL from the doctor, who did the exam, stating I owed about 121 bucks to him!,
for phys. and sugar test.
Statement specified $0 was to be billed to Crum Trucking.
Is this legal?! No way am I gonna pay this!!
I have a voice mail put into the recruting director,Donna, and am waiting with baited breath to call this doctors office tomorrow, which will be Monday. BTW my "hire-go-to-work" date has gone from "before xmas" to "maybe by the end of january". This job is an account dealing with Honda automotive, so the "hire-go-to-work" date, has to be (in this econmy), be somewhat open according to production needs.
So the many start dates, is fully understood by me.

Bottom line, can they legally force me to pay for this crap? IF it goes that far.
VERY IMPORTANT ITEM HERE... this is ASSUMING the doctor, not making a mistake, is gonna exspect pymt. from me. Just MAYBE the bill was sent out by mistake.
Has anyone else reading this, been in this situation, and if so, what did you do? I like to know ahead of time of all the "what ifs", so I can prepare myself no matter what

BTW!! I know how drivers like to ALWAYS mention how long they been driving, and I have been driving 21 yrs and have NEVER paid or asked to pay for this crap!!

Thanks to all,in advance who respond to this!!!!

It is very probable that the Dr. office did not file this correctly. I would take it back to them and ask to be refiled. I have not had this occur for a physical, but numerous other doctor and dentist bills have been sent to me for payment. I give them back to the offices and say try again. 9 times out of 10 someone charted it in the wrong code or some typo.

Having said all that, if it's going to cost me 1/2 days work to screw with them, running all over town, sometimes it's easier to pay it and move on.

One of the forms that you sign there is a a clause that you are the responsible for payment. Same if you went to the doctor and had insurance. If the insurance denies the claim you are liable.

I agree that paying for a company required physical is wrong but I wouldn't be surprised to see more of the low-bid outfits start doing this as more and more of us are looking for jobs.

I agree with Spacecadet that it was probably billed out incorrectly.

If the physicals and drug tests are required by LAW, I dont see how an employer can stick you for them. I have had many companies try to deduct the cost of this crap if I leave employment before x number of months had passed. I dont see how they can legally do that. When I see that crap in the handbook or on the application, that is a good indication that the place is a meat-grinder with an unacceptable turn-over level, and they are expecting me not to stay very long...

there are perhaps a few scenario's at work here.......

one is that they WILL reimburse you upon final employment

one is that this is a driver leasing company that is actually doing the hiring, and they will reimburse you later, after say about 3 months of employment.

another is that this company is doing the hiring (for say) an owner-operator that has the account, and to be hired on by an owner-operator (whom you may actually end up working for), you are required to pay up front, and be reimbursed later.

another is that it was coded wrong at the office.

another is that no matter what, YOU ARE PAYING for the exam.....and IF THAT IS the case, YOU ARE ENTITLED to the whole, original copy of ALL the documents of the exam, and the employer only gets COPIES.....!!!!

AND BY THE WAY...........

i personally have been subjected to "ALL OF THE ABOVE" in ALL MY years of driving.............
