Question Trucker laws

I got stuck in Houston last week and was talking with another driver who enlightened me on a law and I was wondering if any of you knew anything about it.
He told me that a DOT man told him you are not allowed to have anything in your cab that can be used as a weapon. He said you can get 25yrs if they find anything. He said he had a couple screwdrivers and a hammer and each time the DOT picked one up he told him there's 25,there's 25,there's 25. He said he now keeps everything in his sidebox. As a flatbedder thats hard to do because I have 12 4" straps, and triangles in there which doesn't leave much room for anything else. I did put my tools in the bed area, with my hunting knife. How are we supposed to protect ourselves? One of our drivers told me that he got out to pee one night and got mugged. He doesn't get out of his truck after dark now. What do you guys use as protection?

That sounds pretty extreme. Whats to stop us from using the vehicle as a weapon?

Situational awareness, a confident attitude that dares someone to mess with me, and years of martial arts. :)

i think you need to stop listening to these drivers tales.I once told a DOT that I had a 357Mag.in the truck.Good he said you might need it some time. But this was in Texas. We are naked without our guns.Any way that phrase anything that can be used as a weapon covers a lot even covers DOT safety equip.Fire Ex.Flares,.Even the Mag lite we carry.I all most forgot lots of drivers have a very good weapon called FIDO.
