Default Help!...im clueless

I am 22 years old and I want to know what I have to do to get a truck driving job. I dont have any kind of license other than my regular driving license (i drive a honda civic). However, I am fascinated by your profession, but I have no idea how to start out.

What is the path to getting an entry level truck driving job? What kind of license/training do I have to go through, how long does it take, and how much will it cost me?

i think the bumper on my truck is made from a melted down honda civic.you should check into swift or another large trucking comp about going to their driving school.or a private driving school but that can be expensive.

Hi there. Welcome to TruckingBoards.com. I am glad to see everyone who is interested in this career. Driving can be a very good paying career. Just have to put some time into it. To get started you really have 2 options. First is to goto a local driving school. You can find them in every city. Sometimes your local Community Collage will offer it, or there will be a school just for that, like All-State Careers. That is one of the driving schools we have near Pittsburgh,PA. Now school will run you about $5,000 and usually will last like 6 weeks i think. The second option is to attend a companies driver school. These are your ROEHL, Swift, Werner, and Schneider to name a few. They will for no cost take you into there school and get you CDL trained. Now nothing isn't ever really free. These companies will expect you to stay like 2 to 3 years. If you leave them early they will make you pay a few grand to pay back there schooling. I hope this helps you. Don't hesitate to write me with any questions. Ask any here, these guys on the boards are a very good collections of men and women!

WELCOME TO TB ozzhalo16!!

As one within the "collections of men and women here at TB":

Driving Schools or Academies can run anywhere from $2,000.00 to $6,000.00,
just depends upon where one signs up.
The driving school I went to in '98 in TN cost a wee bit over $4,000.00
My wife went to a Driving School here in NC and she paid just over $2100.00

College courses are of course much less however they're usually a bit longer.

THOROUGHLY DO SOME CHECKING AROUND BEFORE COMMITTING.

Your age may present a problem as well because a lot of companies prefer applicants to be 23 and up, yet this is just from what I know and I now know that what I thought I knew, I really didn't know.

I just hope you realize that you will be going over the road for the first year or two and hope you know that the big ole truck that looks so cool will become your new home.

Think long and hard and do your homework on whats involved in being a OTR driver!
