Default Tanker Endorsement

Is a tanker endorsement required for dry bulk tankers?

Interesting question. I looked on my home state, Oregon, and this is all that is said.

"A tank vehicle endorsement authorizes the operation of any commercial motor vehicle carrying liquids or gaseous materials. A tank vehicle endorsement is not required for portable tanks having a rated capacity under 1,000 gallons." So it would appear not.

I looked on the FMSCA site and couldn't find anything that answered the question. I do know that OR follows the Federal guidelines for driver regulations, as most states do.

The Code of Federal Regulations--CFR 383.5 Says essentially the same thing that I quoted before from Oregon. As far as Illinois their CDL manual says the same thing. Interesting that the company wants tank endorsements. Maybe they didn't buy the right version from the ex-governor. But I could see that having it might save some problems from an unknowing cop.

could be my company may want us to have it because sometimes driver may have to transport asphalt, emulsions, and mineral oil. That doesn't happen often though.
