| | L.T.L. company info. no guesses please.
Not sure if want to stay at ODFL for the long term and seeking info on other ltl companies. Here are some of what info is important to me. As for Old Dominion, the city P&D drivers top rate at the moment is $21.60/Hr. Overtime begins after 60 hours/week. 401K is matched 30% guaranteed but is usually closer to 50% depending on the year. Free basic individual health insurance. And of the companies that do have O.T. at 40 or 45 hours, do they keep you from ever working over 40? If so I'd make more at O.D. with a typical 50 hour work week (in normal economic conditions) than with lets say UPS Freight if they rarely allow any O.T. I also like the fact that at O.D. they let you run some linehaul for extra cash on weekends if you want to and they have the freight. Any of this info on Abf, UPS, Fed-ex, Averitt, Saia, R & L Carriers, Conway, Southeastern or any other major co. I may have left out or any other info you feel is important to making a long term decision would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the book. Thanks.

Averitt city tops at $20. No overtime pay for overtime worked. Fulltime is hard to get because they have gone to combo for everything...something different all the time. No 401k matching. They have what's called profit sharing but for the whole year last year mine was less than $700 (and no contribution for the month of December). It used to avg. $1500 per year. They automatically roll these funds into your 401k.
Positive side ( at least from my perspective) is that they don't mess with you. You do your job and thats all they ask. Strict uniform guidelines are in effect.
If you are thinking of jumping right now, I would hold up and see what happens in the economy over the next few months. Then make a move.

Thanks. | i too worked for an LTL company, just not ODFL. you really have it pretty good right now. no one will NOT keep you from working over 40 hours, BUT if there isn't enough freight, in MOST instances, the senior guys get first crack at it, UNLESS someone has had a bad week and the company hands over some OT to a driver that needs it to catch up with everyone else.
ODFL is NOT a bad company, and frankly, i have wanted to get onto linehaul myself, but there aren't any openings.

Con-way (central/east) has great pay ($23.55 hr .555 per mile but takes 5 years and 3 months to reach) and good bennies but you do not want to work here. Very uncertain future for drivers due to purchase transportation eliminating line-haul. I don't think there is any terminal hiring at this point. Most still have guy's on lay-off to bring back first. The job pays great once you top out but it takes to long and the future for the bottom third of the board is uncertain at best. Stay away. Stay far away.

Thanks for the info. I'm not unhappy at odfl thats for sure. But O.T. and a retirement pension are a huge benifit in the long run. I guess Y.R.C., ABF, or UPS Freight are the only ones that offer both.
