Default Red Light Turn Legal or Not?

I'm in the middle of CDL Class A training and would like to know if its legal to make a right turn at an intersection, after signalling and stopping for the red light? I know of course its legal with a car, but my instructor said I can't with a tractor-trailer. I couldn't find that rule in the CA Commercial Drivers Handbook.

He's full of crap. All depends on the corner and the traffic. If you don't know if its legal in that state, don't go.

Maybe your instructor doesn't want you doing it during training. A right turn on red is legal after coming to a complete stop. Keep in mind trucks take longer to get up to speed, so sometimes due to the amount of approaching traffic you're better off just waiting for the light.

Thanks for the replies. I think it was the busy traffic approaching, so he was being extra cautious. I have my final road test coming up in a couple weeks.

Im sure that is just the schools policy the school I went through said the same thing. I dont know of any state that has that law. Just dont send me the ticket if you find one that does.

Well states' rules and regs vary, but most states let you do it, esp in the south...We Cannot possibly keep track of each of 48 state's laws so i would just 'do as the romans do'- look if others are doing it, if yes, it must be legal...I never got a ticket for it, and I just yield for a rh turn even infront on lawmen. Just be sure to approach the intersection planning on stopping unlike some of the 4wheelers out there lately...
