Default How to get started?

I've been driving for 9 years doing street construction, with a clean record. I have a tank and hazmat endorsement. What is the best way to start hauling fuel? Is it best to start with a smalller company? I see Sunoco, Irving, and Exxon hiring every now and then. Does a guy with no fuel hauling experience have a chance with one of these companies? Thanks in advance.

Most of the oil companies that operate thier own fleets wont hire anyone with no previous petroleum tanker driving, so you need to go with a smaller outfit before you can go there.

Also you might get your foot in the door by hauling Propane, Butane or other flammable liquids and/or gases as well.

Good luck to you!

Exxon is in the process of getting rid of their fleet, and using outside trucking companies to service their station. Many of the other carriers have training programs available to train you if you have a couple of years of tractor trailer experience.

Thanks for the help, I'll take a look at some of the local companies. I wonder if all the bigger companies are eventually going to use outside carriers?

In Canada, there are no more refiner owned fleets. This has been the case for about 20 years. It is a liability thing, and the big money does not want to carry that risk.
