Default Anyone ever hit a deer?

Was buying some tires Fri and I overheard a conversation from 2 guysabout one of their fellow drivers.
He wrecked his truck in Pa last week.
A deer jumped out he slammed on the brakes with a tanker and jack knifed into an embankment (they said it was inevitable with the liquid surge.)
The guy was a very experienced driver with a "trick my truck rig" he's been around tanks and rt 80 for a long time.
Yet his first reaction was to hit the brakes.

Any arm chair quarterback is going to say he should have just hit the deer.
But apparently when in this situation a very experienced driver reacted with a brake application with a tank no less.
Is this an automatic reaction that you are going to do whether you want to or not?

I've had a few close calls, luckily, I haven't got one yet. I hope my luck continues.
Yes I did go for the brakes, I think it is an automatic reaction. I have kind of trained myself though to not hit the brakes real hard because I am usually pulling more than one trailer when I am in a place where deer are likely to be.
Good question though, I look forward to the other responses.

I've hit them and they have hit me. The best policy is to slow down if you can safely do so and aim at the deer. You have a better chance that they will not be there when you get there than if you swerve to miss them.

I've seen MANY Deer alongside MANY roads and only once have I come upon one ON the road. I could not slow down safely so I just hit the electric air horn (Volvo), flashed the Lights and it scampered away.
