I worked with a fellow in Charlotte that did 16 months in Iraq driving a fuel truck. He didn't like talking about it much but what he did say was road side bombs and getting fired at were pretty much a daily thing. He finally decided he had enough when his convoy was attacked heavily one day and half of them were injured or killed. Keep in mind that was with the military escort which every convoy has. What happens never makes the news here. Kinda funny? No, they know if it did make the news nobody would want do it. A co worker and I at that time was also offered positions to go over there and handle dispatch operations. We would never be able to leave the compound for the most part for the entire time we would be there. Yes the compound has been attacked but nobody ever made it inside and nobody was ever injured or killed according to the man on the phone. Yeah sounds like a place I really want to go..............NOT. My co worker was trying really hard to talk me into because he was to scared to go by himself. Just ain't enough money to make me wanna go work in that situation. But he still hasn't let up on the idea. Every few months or so he will bring up that his friend called the other day wanting to know if we were ready to go over yet. I always give the same answer Hell No!!! Oh and the pampering execs part, I didn't mention that I could have a lobster every day if I wanted it. Now going back to the truck driver that was over there it took him quite a while to adjust to being back over here. The first time I saw that he was still adjusting, we were walking thru the parking lot and in the shop somebody dropped something and it made a huge boom noise, he hit the ground. Just an automatic reponse according to him. Didn't know what to really say to him when he got up and realized that hey it was ok. But he is doing ok now. He looks alot better and his attitude is way better. So anybody considering this really needs to know what they are getting into. |
