| | Got myself backed into a corner.
Well, like the title says, I have myself backed into a corner. In short, I worked as a land surveyor for several years. That dried up around here and I opted for trucking. I went OTR for a few years and then local driving dumps and a cement mixer.
Now, with the economy as such, there is no work around here and I have been laid off since the beginning of Dec. With no work and the economy looking bleek, I decided to try to get back out on the road.
The corner I am backed into is that it would seem that I am unemployable by any reputable trucking company. This is entirely because I havent driven a rig in over 4 years. My DAC is spotless. Even so, only 2 companies are even somewhat interested in me. USA and CR England. Neither of which I really cherish the thought of working for. But beggars can't be choosers, right?
For the year that I'll need to suck it up and drive for one of these companies, I know I wont make any money to speak of with either. That's a given. I know I'll be a number to both and couldn't care less what equipment they use. What I am concerned most with is home time. Might sound odd. But it's the truth. I am divorced and am working hard to maintain a very good relationship with my son. Being out 3 or 4 (or more) weeks at a time, everytime, is not an option.
They can say all they want about getting me home. But I've been around the block and know not to trust what they say. Does anyone have any comments, good or bad, about the home time for these companies? Or maybe know of other companies that are hiring "inexperienced" (hate to use that word) drivers out of Ohio now?
I really need to be home every other weekend. I know that isn't written in stone with any company. But as many of those 26 a year as possible.
Thanks,
LooseNut

| | Wish you luck brother, I am divorcing and maintaining a very close relationship with my daughter and son, I am local, I work for PFG, foodservice, such as sysco or us foodservice, in case you haven't heard of us, I recomend it, you get to go to work early and get off early sometimes, other times its late but never after 1700, I don't know how old you are, but this may be an option for you, take off early in the morning and look for these drivers at anywhere food is prepared, trust me they will be in a big hurry but they will be glad to talk to you so long as you don't mind if they talk while they work, respect the fact that they are working, when they get the wheeler full tell them you'll talk to them when they get back for their next wheeler load full, they will know you understand and possibly slow down to speak with you more in depth. I know, I'm one of those guys!!! |

Chili Bowl, I knew it well when I used to run Dedicated from Winston-Salem, NC to Detroit. I used to park at the Coop before I learned about Rt. 104.
Don't have a clue which companies are available around there.
Cr england is Reefer and USA truck ain't.
Neither is a good idea regardless and most Reefer outfits want to keep Newbies out for at least a Month with a trainer (and/or longer from all reports I've read) AFTER Orientation.
This company seems to push the Lease a truck thing which you DO NOT want to DO.
USA truck is located near our lovely and wonderful grocery_thrower.
Getting into something aligned with Food, Water (treatment, reclamation), Health or Garbage is the way to go Mate.

| | Loose nut, CK knows what he is talking about, I talked to an england driver about a month ago and he said he wasn't making much at all, usa truck...LOL I have known several drivers for them, if you have been there a while you get treated very well, as a newbie, like dirt!! You won't make much money either. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
