Hello oldcarguy and WELCOME TO TRUCKINGBOARDS!!
I went to some goofy school in Tennessee (north of Nashville) in late '98 and it wasn't 160 hours if it was even 80.
Funny stuff as I can recall:
Got to the training area (old small truck stop behind closed building) about the third or 4th day to discover all outside drive tires had been stolen from one of the tractors. Rims were intact.
The equipment was third world stuff, typical worn out crap BUT like heavy equipment, if one can operate garbage, one has no problem with newer models.
ALL ANSWERS to ALL TESTS at the DMV were ingrained before testing.
The school was all about the money and the training was just enough to get the License then we were booted out.
The school claimed to have alliances with numerous companies which quickly became 2 companies one of which was Burlington Motor Express.
WE know where they went: Out Of Business.
The school disappeared soon after.
Apart from the training school, the motel a bunch of students were staying at (specifically the room I was in) was raided by some local County Mounties looking for someone no one knew. That was exciting.
