As a company driver your dispatcher will take care of notifying you where your next load is, when it is scheduled for pick up, where it is going, and when you are supposed to make the delivery.
Of course there are several different "types" of drivers and each one is a little different.
If you become and owner operator at some point you will have more say over where you go, when you go, how you go, how fast you go, and what you drive.
True Independents will have their own truck, trailer, and operating authority. In addition to the above, they also will negotiate with shippers and/or freight brokers for loads and the rate of pay. Of course they also may have to wait 30 to 90 days to collect their money from the shipper/broker.
Lease operators may own their own truck or may be renting their truck and act an an independent contractor with the exception; they "lease on" to a carrier in exchange for access to their shippers and discounts on insurance, parts, labor rates, fuel, etc. In exchange for these "discounts" a carrier will normally provide a fuel card, plates, permits, liability insurance, etc for a set cpm rate or percentage of the freight bill paid out after the signed bills have been received.
