Post go home for pay

hi everyone. im gonna be new to truck driving, and i've always wondered how truckers get back home..

heres what i mean

lets say a company sends you from portland oregon to minneapolis and they pay you once you have shipped your cargo to minneapolis. how do u get back to portland? do they pay u to drive an empty truck back to portland? or do they load you up with some stuff at minneapolis to ship back to portland, or do they make u drive the truck back without pay and gas money out of your own pocket? or do you just not go back?

the way its done is, you get to drive deadhead (empty) a few miles to make another pick-up. you then get to drive someplace else, not usually home. you have to make deliveries and more pick-ups. as an OTR driver, which i can only "surmise" at this time you are or WILL BE, expect to be away from home 2 to 5 weeks at a time........

no trucking company is ever going to allow ANY driver to drive back that many miles empty. it just ain't gonna happen.

so, in a round about way.........like you say....."you just not go back".......

welcome to the world of truck driving........OTR (over the road)

Default so im gone from 2-5 weeks

well ok. since i go from point A to point B, once i get to point b, do i need to find another load to put on my truck? or will the dispatcher have it all arranged...i would hate to be stuck in sanbernardino in the middle of the night looking for another load.

As a company driver your dispatcher will take care of notifying you where your next load is, when it is scheduled for pick up, where it is going, and when you are supposed to make the delivery.

Of course there are several different "types" of drivers and each one is a little different.

If you become and owner operator at some point you will have more say over where you go, when you go, how you go, how fast you go, and what you drive.

True Independents will have their own truck, trailer, and operating authority. In addition to the above, they also will negotiate with shippers and/or freight brokers for loads and the rate of pay. Of course they also may have to wait 30 to 90 days to collect their money from the shipper/broker.

Lease operators may own their own truck or may be renting their truck and act an an independent contractor with the exception; they "lease on" to a carrier in exchange for access to their shippers and discounts on insurance, parts, labor rates, fuel, etc. In exchange for these "discounts" a carrier will normally provide a fuel card, plates, permits, liability insurance, etc for a set cpm rate or percentage of the freight bill paid out after the signed bills have been received.

Home is that little room behind your driver's seat.
