am 44 getting ready to go to school oct9th taking a 15 week course for my cdl-a and Endorsements the course is ptdi certifed total of 600 hours of training to include actual otr training .trying to get some info on get a prehire before graudation in jan 2010.have alittle problem possible two.
have not work since june 05 do to injury collecting ssi and for a short time in that period was taking care of my ill mother.now released and cleared by doc to work with no limitations,but also so have misdemeanor conviction in 2000 for 2nd deg assualt,handgun on person it was mine and registered just not stored properly.also volation of probation all in 2000.all is finished has been since 2003.no charges since or prior to those.
how hard is going to be for me to get with a decent company so can earn a living and run some miles.any help suggestions or advise very much appreciated.a list of possible company to look into would be great.no dui or accidents ever reg license since 16 now 44 no points or tickets of any kind.and prior to my none work related injury had a great work history. thanks an advance

The background checks will go back ten years at least. I hope you are not paying for this driving school because your record in not spotless and lots of eperienced drivers with clean records are out of work right now.

this all sounds vaguely familiar to me. either here on these boards, or other boards i am a member of. i do remember telling (someone else...??) that the handgun conviction is going to be with that person for a LONG time. assault is assault no matter what. i'm trying to remember, i think THAT person was from the MD area.........??? the "not stored properly" is what is giving away this thread. THAT person was told pretty much forgedaboudit, as far as trucking is concerned. i'd pretty much REPEAT that here as well. assault WITH A GUN, OR ANY WEAPON is pretty much a death kneal is this business. ALMOST all companies are now banning ANY convictions..........Werner is, and Swift has followed........sure, not the 2 best companies, BUT, they are big, and for the other companies to follow, it won't be too far long.

you might want to try another line of work, beacuse with ANY assault convictions, trucking companies DON'T NEED someone who has that on thier past. too many GOOD drivers with clean backgrounds are in NEED of jobs too. they will most certainly be hired first.


PS, i have to leave for work soon. i'll do some in depth checking tonight when i get home, or thursday morning for sure. i'll FIND THAT person's thread and copy-paste it here (minus any other website address of course), for all to see and read ALL the response's HE GOT...........

aarons, it DOESN'T MATTER the "misdemeanor" charges........

its still a CONVICTION..............

assault, is assault..............you have shown that you can be or are easily quick to draw a gun...........in the eyes of the trucking companies.........

you will probably have to settle for a job with a low-end trucking company, and stay there for a while........sorry, but this IS something i see at my school..........

aaron, since this involves the ex-wife, to some trucking companies, this can be taken as "domestic violence".........from this stand point, you will not get a chance to explain.

for instance, you claim to have come home from the gun range.......

why was your gun in you coat then........??

it should have been in a case, in the car, hidden away...........

whether or not you HAD a permit to carry, this is out the window.....

cops called, a search ensued, you got the gun, you got arrested, you got charged, you got convicted...........


from here, you ain't got much of a chance at a job right now.........

you might have to try a Class B job, like, dump trucks, cement mixers, flat bed wreckers, garbage trucks, etc,etc..........

i cannot see any OTR company hiring you..........

these things i do know from my current job status as a driver trainer.......

CANCEL THE SCHOOLING for you will not get a job with ANY large company driving IF you even are considered because of the VIOLENT FELONY.
You will also (from the many sites I've culled information from) not be able to get it expunged or erased because ANY Violent Felony is not subject to being eliminated unless one does a complete Identity change like of a Witness protection program.

MANY Trucking as well as non Trucking companies have altered, added to or completely changed their qualifications/requirements with most stating clearly NO FELONIES within a minimum 10 years and some companies state clearly NO FELONIES regardless.

I have a Misdemeanor DUI (yet tried and convicted in Criminal court) from 8/91 and I still have some problems with Companies whether of driving or not.
