Default Greetings from a UK trucker

Evening folks,

Just signed up on here as my family and I are looking at the possibility of upping sticks and moving to the US, I currently drive a wagon for an English firm doing national work, spend 2-3 nights out at the minute, but used to spend all week out and about.I've been driving trucks of some sort or another for about 10 years.

Were getting to the point where enough is enough with this country of ours, so thought we'd come and sample yours .
Were looking at maybe moving to somewhere in North Carolina as my wife has a Brother who will be moving there shortly from Florida, and I have an Uncle who will be moving there form Frederick at some point.
I'm hoping I can get some valuable information on here aswell.

Thanks
Stu.

Welcome to TB Mate!!

The Official Travel & Tourism Website for North Carolina

Lorry Drivers have different requirements than the lazy stipulations apparent here in the states.
WE have LARGER roads and few COEs.
I've rarely seen a Scania here.

There have been quite many Manufacturing companies that have either outright folded or moved to Mexico. There used to be a flourishing business in Textiles in NC yet these are gone as are many other large corporations of similar construct.
There are Trucking Companies about yet they like the rest have altered/changed their qualifications/requirements to effectively eliminate many experienced Drivers.

Your Brother in law has apparently had a moment of clarity in wanting to leave Florida.

Well you asked for advice so here it is. America is in a serious recession right now and lots of long time truckers are out of work, so you may not get on with a company any time soon. We also have no real safety nets or national health care so you are on your own if you can't get work or become ill or hurt. As for NC, you must be able to handle the high humidity along with the heat in our southern states. Coming from the cold UK that might be difficult. Why are you considering a move to the US? Are things that bad in the UK?
