Default Question about running New York

I will be taking a run from Flint,mi to Plattsburg,Ny. I cannot run through Canada. I have run out there before but I had a drop just inside Vermont first so i ran 87 North off of 90. My gps shows taking 81 to state route 11 across as being 50 miles shorter.......however I am very leary about running any two lane in mountainous country. Has anyone run 11 through the adirondacks? is it a good road or would I be better off running over to 87 and up?
