When I brought the subject up - I got a rude – “let’s just stick to the questions sir.”
It pays to know who your driving for, what’s their history for safety, driver relations and a host of other topics.
In this case, the contracting of owner operators with two and three rigs were being provided the service of the extended employment arm for somebody else. And this is not all that uncommon. It’s just very helpful to know up front when your filling out the employment application who’s going to be paying the bills, safety issues and a ton of other stuff. I knew one of the operators who was on the list of indpendents, and he's had working relationship issues since day one.
In fact, Federal Express is known for this employment screening process - not that I heard its all bad. In fact, there’s nothing wrong with the practice - it’s just business. But it should be your business to ask. |
The part about
let's just stick to the questions sir would toss a bit of negativity into most conversations and for many that I've known would engage alternate conversations or simply end the conversation altogether.
I've worked for a few Driver Temp services however I rather doubt they inquired about experience driving equipment other than of what I stated.
Many of the Companies and (of course) Owner Operators (since they're ALL O. O.s anyways) were rather to very Driver friendly with as usual the exceptions being a reason I departed their employ.
They generally paid the bills, supplied decent to well kept/maintained equipment and didn't balk when approached for upgrades to either equipment or pay. They paid for Lumpers with supplied funds or reimbursed quickly. I NEVER paid for repairs to equipment.
I KNEW for whom I drove and of what they represented or I went to where I needed to be when I needed to be wherever.
My last OTR employer from '05 to '08 of whom I worked 4 times since '98 gave great references to whomever requested such.

I'm currently Off The Road working in a local distribution center through a temporary service operating (driving?) a Slip Sheet (not slip seat) Lift loading/unloading trailers for walmart and relocating stock.
I'm glad to be there and not in the
seeking a driving gig pandemonium.
