Default Owner Operators?

Would it be a wise choice to be a O/O in this economy, if:

You're truck & trailer was paid for, and all you had to pay for was fuel and maint?

I've seen companies hiring O/O's and advertising like 1.50 a mile pay, etc etc. and was just wondering who on here is a O/O and how you're business is going. There are a ton of companies and other people selling off really nice and good condition trucks dirt cheap around here, and it's really got me thinking about it.

If you have the means to buy a Truck and/or Trailer right now, it is a great time to do so cause you're right you can pick up some really nice equipment for very reasonable prices. I'm not sure if you want to completely pay cash for it though you'll need to talk to an accountant about that, i think the tax benefits will be better if your carrying some sort of note on your equipment versus owning it outright. I'm an O/O with own authority and some months are good and some aren't it's just a matter of riding the storm out now. I think were past the worst of it, freight volumes are steadily going up (not a lot) but they are going up. We'll see if it lasts i hope it does but one never knows for sure. Good Luck in your decision.

I was just looking online on craigslist at trucks, and my god! I found SEVERAL Freightliner century class for at or under 10k, some with and without trailer. and all of them looked real good, with recent clutches, engine overhauls etc etc..just got me thinking, i really want to buy a 03/04 Mustang Cobra..but those are 20k or so..if i could buy my own rig for around half that, I'd be set when the economy picked back up.

Here are just a few examples of what to expect when owning your own rig(s) and being part of a operating system. The requirements of addressing each organization are different, but this will give you some idea of what your in for.

- Lydall Transport is out of Glen Allen, Virginia and you can find their information at Lydall Transport - Owner Operators
-Kennedy Trucking is out of Kearny, NJ and you can find their information at
LJ Kennedy Trucking
- John Veriha Trucking is out of Marinette, WI and you can find their information at
John Veriha Trucking, Inc.

I`ve been in trucking a long time the first 18 years company and the last 16 as an OO. If your tractor is paid for, you have modest home expenses, you have a healthy reserve fund set aside(beyond your regular savings) and are willing to either have an unsteady income or be flexible as to what you run you can do it.
Example: Guys won`t run NYC. Well if that`s what`s available and the rate is great....then off to NYC I go. On other days nothing seems to pay what it should then I`m willing to stay home and not haul cheap freight.

PS There is way more expenses then just fuel and maintenance.
