I would give some serious thought into going to a trade school, if you don't want college. Electricians with senority make over 30 bucks an hour regular time, for instance, which is far more then most drivers make. Trucking was never cut out for everyone and lots of us old timers wish we had gone on to something else, even if the ride was good while it lasted. The problem is the good times in trucking are gone forever now. I highly advise you to read more about OTR driving and being gone from home for a month or two easily. If you want a family OTR will make that very difficult to say the least. Good luck to you no matter what path in life that you chose.

Well, my main thinking was to see what company would hire me at 18 years old... I am in the considering stage right now, and I just want to know who would hire me at 18, and let me drive.. Wether it be a tractor/trailer or just a tantem truck...

you say you will be 18 "in a few years"..........how old are you know.....??

currently, there aren't too many jobs. the unemployment situation being what it is, ANY ONE with experience is taking those jobs to support themselves or thier families.

i do believe you ought to just stay in school get your education, then perhaps attend some sort of post secondary (?) school for further education, whether it be a trade school technical school or community college, and become the best educated person you can be. a general high school diploma isn't cutting it these days either. i also think you should seriously consider talking with your school's (we called them) guidance counsler and get the best available forcast of jobs in the future, which you have a long way off to go just yet.

the most you "might get" for driving at 18 to 21 is probably a automotive parts store, as a runner/chaser, or maybe a bread delivery truck, because you will not be able to cross state lines, making you not too important to an employer that NEEDS a driver to go the distance.

Maybe try getting on with a road construction company when you graduate High School. I'm a young guy (25) and learned to drive as a construction equipment operator in the Air Force. I would advise to stay away from driving over the road if you can get experience any other way i.e. dumptrucks something local. I got lucky right out of the Air Force and worked two LTL jobs before due to being laidoff this spring I had to take something over the road. If I had to start out doing this I probly would have run far away from the industry. Seriously see what you can do about getting into a trade school or something. If trucks are really something you like maybe be a diesel mechanic or something.
