owneroperator looking for advice

i have been out of the trucking business for sevral years an my recent job is playing out is there a living to be made as an owneroperator in the south now?i still have may rights i know trucks are cheap but is there frieght to haul? i live in south alabama any help would be appreciated. thanks

It's a shame what people will haul freight for. It cost over a buck a mile to operate a truck. It's like going to the post office and ask them to give you $20 dollars to send a package to your cousin in Texas. Lol

yes its harder than i have ever seen it to make a living. i dont know what to try any more i had some good years in trucking just found a local job an know thats playing out. thanks for your help

We used to say "a buck a mile will make you smile" but that was back when fuel was under and around a buck. Those rates in gonfercoffees post were running around $1.10-$1.60, I saw one that went about $1.90. Then ya gotta figure in your dead-head to.
With fuel and other overhead so much higher now man all I can say is with a truck/trailer payment your gonna work your butt off and barely get by with rates like those.

Take this one for example....

By the time you figure in the 121 mile dead-head your looking at $1.20/mile. That ain't gonna cut it with todays prices.
Like mildew said above, it takes a buck or more a mile just to run the truck these days.

I would look into leasing to somebody like Landstar. The rates may not be much higher but you can get insurance and maybe fuel and tires at a discount thru a big company like that. Those kind of perks add up real fast and the settlement checks will be more reliable.
I'd like to have the money brokers robbed from me back in the '80's and '90's. Don't get me wrong, all brokers ain't thieves just some are.
The problem is trying to figure out who pays right and who is slow or will not settle.

dragracer66 you said you still have your rights from before so you probably already know all this. I just thought I'd post it for others who might be thinking about going O/O for the first time.
